What a Grange the 2016 vintage has yielded! This bright deepened red, iris-purple to the rim is something special.
On the nose, it represents a fusion of preserved figs, black plum, blackberry and black liquorice flirts with an aromatic elution of fish oil, anchovy, soy and sesame. There are also scents of charred meats. An uplifting freshness and higher notes are liberated with an air of cola, aniseed, root beer.
The palate is full-bodied, yet respectful of balance and style with an impressive density and length. The oak effortlessly merges with blue and black fruits and dark chocolate notes.
Peak drinking is 2022-2065.

“Penfolds nailed the great 2016 vintage, making a wine that is perfect in every way. The blend of 97% shiraz and 3% cabernet sauvignon comes from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate in Adelaide, in that order, and as usual spent 18 months in new American hogsheads. Its detail is superb, with light and shade allowing blackberry and plum fruit pride of place, but there’s also flashes of spice and licorice. It’s as mouth-watering with the last taste as the first, and 7.3g/L of acidity leaves the mouth fresh”
About Penfolds Grange
Grange is arguably Australia’s most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.
Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.
